This project was based on a brief set by McCann London, aiming to change the International Symbol for Access. Currently, the symbol is that of a wheelchair user, although 93% of people who are disabled don’t use a wheelchair. A theoretical new symbol would have to inclusive of all disabilities, visible and invisible.

My response to the brief was to try and represent physical, mental and genetic disabilities.

The DNA double helix was the main form for the body, in order to represent genetic disability. The negative space in the limbs aims to show the lack of ability in these areas, along with the head.

The plus symbol for the head is trying to be positive about mental disabilities, so as to positively represent disabilities that may be hidden from view.
